Today I celebrate the writing of 62,000 words on my first YA (Young Adult) novel. The book is a coming-of-age romance about Gretchen and Hayden who are heading to high school, while they work through the heart-wrenching issues of grief. Their widowed dads tag along for the journey as well, stirring up interesting plot lines! I’m excited about this project, and I will continue to share updates.
This book started as a children’s story, Gretchen Grief: Sharing Her Heart. I wrote the short story during a snow day off from school. Valentine’s Day neared, and I recently volunteered at the Lost and Found Grief Center where the kids were doing a heart activity.
From here, my mind has not rested because Gretchen and Hayden wanted to grow up quickly, and they kept sharing stories. So, I typed them up, and soon I’ll pass them on.
Author of Eulogies Unspoken: Stories of Worth, Caring for Dad: With Love and Tomatoes, and the YA novel Love at the Center of Grief, which won an IPPY award! Most recently, I wrote the sequel, Beyond the Center of Grief. It is my mission to continue my Summerfort Grief Series for teens. The deaths of my parents inspired me to write. It's my goal to share my grief journey through stories and poems. I write from the heart with the hope to help others heal. I volunteer as a group facilitator at the Lost and Found Grief Center in Missouri. And for twenty-five years I was an at-risk teacher for grades 9-12.
