White picket fences, twinkling with lights
Fireplaces crackling, all are warm inside
Children sleep under covers, in the comfort of a bed
Glittered names upon stockings are hung up, overfilled
Presents stacked, bows and ribbons wound ’round each one
Beneath the Christmas tree, children’s granted wishes await
Angel atop the evergreen hints at a smile looking on
Low-income housing and shelters dimly glowing
Gas assistance this season has a long waiting list
Children restless with worry are on the floor or a cot
Unadorned tiny stockings cradle great dreams
Presents in boxes labeled with ages for boy or girl
Beneath the Christmas tree is one granted wish
Angel atop the evergreen hints at a smile looking on
Thoughts: how can be we be an angel to someone in need this holiday season? The Bible has many verses for us to consider about giving to the needy. Matthew 25:35 is one of my favorites: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”
Author of Eulogies Unspoken: Stories of Worth, Caring for Dad: With Love and Tomatoes, and the YA novel Love at the Center of Grief, which won an IPPY award! Most recently, I wrote the sequel, Beyond the Center of Grief. It is my mission to continue my Summerfort Grief Series for teens. The deaths of my parents inspired me to write. It's my goal to share my grief journey through stories and poems. I write from the heart with the hope to help others heal. I volunteer as a group facilitator at the Lost and Found Grief Center in Missouri. And for twenty-five years I was an at-risk teacher for grades 9-12.
